7 Days Machame Route is among the most popular and scenic trekking routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. Approaching the mountain from the south, the journey begins with a short drive from Moshi or Arusha to the Machame Gate. From here, climbers ascend through lush montane forest before reaching the expansive Shira Plateau, with breathtaking views of Mount Meru and the Shira Ridge along the way.
This route is highly recommended for those seeking both adventure and acclimatization, as the 7-day itinerary provides sufficient time to adapt to the altitude. Its diverse landscapes and panoramic vistas make it a favorite choice for many climbers aiming to reach Africa’s highest peak.
Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania – Transfer to Hotel
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be warmly welcomed by our office staff and transferred to your accommodation.
Day 2: Moshi – Machame Gate (1,640m/5,380ft) – Machame Camp (2,850m/9,350ft)
After breakfast, drive to Machame Gate and begin your trek through the lush rainforest. The trail gradually ascends to Machame Camp, where you will spend the night.

Accommodation: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner – Machame Camp
Day 3: Machame Camp – Shira Camp 2 (3,810m/12,500ft)
Continue your ascent, leaving the rainforest behind and entering the low alpine zone. The trail takes you through scenic moorland before reaching Shira Camp 2.
• Hiking Time: 5–6 hours | Distance: 5 km (3 miles) | Zone: Low Alpine Zone
Accommodation: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner – Shira Camp 2
Day 4: Shira Camp 2 – Lava Tower (4,630m/15,190ft) – Barranco Camp (3,976m/13,044ft)
Today is an important acclimatization day. Trek via the Lava Tower before descending into the beautiful Barranco Valley for overnight at Barranco Camp.
• Hiking Time: 8–9 hours | Distance: 10 km (6 miles) | Zone: Low Alpine to High Alpine Zone
Accommodation: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner – Barranco Camp
Day 5: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (3,995m/13,106ft)
Climb the iconic Barranco Wall and follow the trail into the Karanga Valley. This shorter day helps with acclimatization.
• Hiking Time: 4–5 hours | Distance: 4 km (2 miles) | Zone: High Alpine Zone
Accommodation: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner – Karanga Camp
Day 6: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp (4,673m/15,331ft)
A steady climb brings you to Barafu Camp, the base for your summit attempt. Rest early in preparation for the challenging summit night.
• Hiking Time: 4 hours | Distance: 4 km (2 miles) | Zone: High Alpine Zone
Accommodation: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner – Barafu Camp
Day 7: Summit Day – Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895m/19,341ft) – Descend to Mweka Camp (3,100m/10,170ft)
Start your ascent around midnight, trekking through scree and ice fields to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, descend to Mweka Camp.
• Hiking Time: 10–12 hours (4–6 hrs ascent, 5–6 hrs descent) | Distance: 12 km (7 miles) | Zone: Glacial Zone through previous zones
Accommodation: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner – Mweka Camp
Day 8: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate (1,640m/5,340ft) – Moshi
After breakfast, descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you will receive your summit certificate. A transfer will take you back to Moshi for a well-deserved rest and celebration.
• Hiking Time: 3–4 hours | Distance: 10 km (6 miles) | Zone: Rainforest
Day 9: Departure or Safari Extension
Depending on your schedule, you will be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure flight, or you may continue your adventure with a Tanzanian safari extension.
