Best Time to Visit Tanzania
Tanzania is a year-round safari destination, but when you go changes what you see. Here is how the seasons actually differ, so you can match your trip to what matters most to you — dry-season game viewing, the Great Migration, or quieter parks and lower prices.
Dry Season — June to October
This is Tanzania’s classic safari season: little to no rain, cooler temperatures, and thinning vegetation that pushes wildlife toward rivers and waterholes, making animals easier to spot. It is also peak season, so parks are busier and accommodation costs more.
The famous Mara River crossings, where the migration’s wildebeest and zebra herds cross into the northern Serengeti and Kenya’s Maasai Mara, broadly happen from around July to September — though the herds move on their own schedule, not a calendar, so exact timing shifts from year to year.
Green Season — November to May
Short rains typically fall in November, followed by a drier spell, then longer rains from around March to May. Landscapes turn lush and green, birdlife is at its best as migratory species arrive, and parks are noticeably quieter with lower accommodation rates.
This period also includes calving season, broadly January to March, when huge numbers of wildebeest give birth on the short-grass plains around Ndutu and the southern Serengeti — and with the calves come the predators that follow them, making it one of the best times for predator sightings.
April and May bring the heaviest rains and are the quietest months for safari travel; some camps in the more remote areas close altogether.
Climbing Kilimanjaro

Common Questions
Is there really a bad time to visit?
Not exactly — April and May are the quietest and wettest, which some travellers prefer for the lower prices and empty parks, while others find the rain and occasionally muddy roads not worth the trade-off. Every other month has a reasonable case for visiting.
When exactly will the migration be where?
The Great Migration follows a broad seasonal pattern — calving in the south around January to March, moving north through the year, and crossing the Mara River from around July to September — but the herds move on their own timeline, not a fixed schedule, so no operator can guarantee an exact location on an exact date.
