Zanzibar Beach Guide
Zanzibar is not one beach but several very different ones, spread around an island with its own history, spice trade and Swahili culture behind the postcard water. Here is what each area is actually like, so you can choose the stretch of coast that suits the trip you have in mind.
The Main Areas
Nungwi & Kendwa (north) — Zanzibar’s most popular beach area, with calm, swimmable water largely unaffected by the island’s big tides. Nungwi has the liveliest choice of restaurants and beach bars; Kendwa, just along the coast, is quieter and known for its sunset views.
Paje & Jambiani (southeast) — the island’s kitesurfing hub, with wide tidal flats that go from swimmable to a long walk to the water depending on the tide. A more laid-back, backpacker-friendly stretch of coast.
Stone Town (west) — not a beach base, but the island’s historic heart and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with narrow alleyways, the old fort, spice and history tours, and the best food scene on the island. Many trips spend a night here either side of the beach.
Michamvi & Pingwe (east) — a quieter stretch on the same east coast as Paje, with a handful of well-known restaurants built out over the water.
Matemwe (northeast) — a quieter base close to Mnemba Atoll, generally the island’s best snorkelling and diving.
Beyond the Beach
Zanzibar rewards a day or two away from the sand. Stone Town is worth exploring on foot, ideally with a guided spice-farm tour — Zanzibar was once the world’s largest producer of cloves, and “Spice Island” tours remain a genuine highlight. Prison Island (Changuu), a short boat ride from Stone Town, is home to giant Aldabra tortoises, some well over a century old. Off the north coast, boat trips from Kizimkazi look for pods of wild dolphins, and the reef around Mnemba Atoll is Zanzibar’s best-known snorkelling and diving site.
When to Go

Which area has the calmest water for swimming?
Nungwi and Kendwa, in the north, have the most consistently swimmable water — the east coast (Paje, Jambiani, Michamvi) has a much bigger tidal range, so the sea can retreat a long way out at low tide.
Do I need to fly into Zanzibar separately?
Zanzibar has its own international airport, and short flights connect it to Kilimanjaro and Arusha — we can arrange these as part of a combined itinerary.
